Why AI training and document review matters

AI systems learn from carefully prepared human examples. Document review specialists teach models how to interpret, extract, and judge information from Word and PDF files so models can perform complex paperwork tasks reliably.

This work is remote, often part-time and deadline-driven, and gives contributors direct, practical impact on how state-of-the-art systems behave.

The role

OpenTrain is recruiting a Word and PDF Document Review Specialist to perform structured reviews of source documents and model outputs using forms, templates, and rubrics. You will record evaluation ratings and produce clear written feedback so models learn from consistent, expert human judgment.

  • Contract, part-time role — 20+ hours per week, remote (U.S. applicants only).
  • Pay: $20–$55 per hour, paid per hour.
  • Work involves document evaluation and text-generation feedback (label types: evaluation_rating and text_generation).

What you'll do

Your primary responsibilities are reviewing documents against project guidelines, explaining judgments, and keeping quality high and consistent across repeated tasks.

  • Review source materials and model outputs against detailed project guidelines and rubrics.
  • Provide clear written explanations of judgments so feedback can improve model behavior.
  • Work extensively with Word and PDF documents, using forms, templates, tracked changes, and version control.
  • Extract and consolidate information from complex documents, maintaining accuracy and consistency.

Requirements

This is an expert-level role: you must bring substantial real-world experience working with Word and PDF documents and familiarity with regulated document workflows.

  • 3+ years of intensive professional Word and PDF work.
  • Advanced document formatting, markup, tracked changes, and version control skills.
  • Experience extracting and consolidating information from complex documents.
  • Familiarity with legal, regulatory, or compliance-driven document workflows.
  • Strong written communication, attention to detail, and ability to follow detailed project instructions.
  • Comfort working independently as a remote contractor and discretion with confidential materials.

Who should apply

Apply if you are an experienced document specialist who wants to apply your formatting, review, and compliance knowledge to teach AI systems. Prior AI-training experience is helpful but not required; real-world domain expertise and rigorous attention to detail are the key qualifications.

  • Fluent English required.
  • U.S.-based applicants only.
  • Open to contractors seeking steady part-time, deadline-driven work.

Schedule, pay, and next steps

This role is remote with a deadline-driven pace and requires 20+ hours per week. Hourly pay ranges from $20 to $55 depending on experience and task complexity.

To apply, create or sign in to your OpenTrain profile, complete the required screening tasks, and submit your experience examples. Building a strong OpenTrain profile helps highlight your relevant document work and increases your chances for ongoing projects.
