Department: Ground Operations

Pay Rate: $20.72 per hour

Overview

Ramp Agents at Southwest work outside to guide planes, move bags and cargo, help with de-icing during cold weather, and keep the operation running smoothly. It is a busy, hands-on role that requires teamwork to ensure flights leave on time. Role Summary

Ramp Agents perform outside duties to support aircraft operations, including guiding planes, loading/unloading baggage and cargo, de-icing, and ensuring smooth operations for on-time departures. The role is hands-on and involves teamwork and active participation in daily ramp activities. A day on the ramp provides practical experience in aviation operations.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Provide friendly service and maintain positive relationships with internal and external customers
  • Work cooperatively to support the company’s success
  • Provide customer service to travelers and cargo/baggage services by servicing aircraft at ramps and terminals
  • Load, unload, service, guide, and direct Company aircraft
  • Receive and record customer baggage, air freight, mail, and company materials
  • Handle loading, stowing, and unloading of baggage, cargo, air mail, ballast, and materials per plan from Operations
  • Transport cargo and baggage to/from aircraft and prepare related records
  • Warehousing, weighing, stacking, picking up and delivering air cargo; verify forms and correct discrepancies
  • Safeguard passengers' baggage, air cargo, and other materials from weather, loss, theft, damage
  • Use jetway stairs to carry items to the aircraft bin
  • Review cargo forms for accuracy and correct as needed
  • Perform interior cabin cleaning, including cleaning windows, galleys, and disposal containers
  • Service lavatories and operate related carts
  • May perform duties of a Provisioning Agent, stocking aircraft interiors and maintaining inventory
  • Transport cabin and cleaning equipment between areas
  • Operate and/or drive motorized equipment (belt loaders, lift trucks, etc.)
  • Move push carts and containers as required
  • Work in areas around terminals, hangars, and freight facilities, indoors and outdoors
  • Work in varying weather conditions and around jet and machinery noise
  • Complete forms and paperwork per procedures and enter data into the company system
  • Duties may vary by station size and organization
  • Provide friendly service to coworkers and customers; interact with delivery agents and shippers
  • Meet any physical ability requirements listed in the job description
  • May perform other duties as directed by leadership

Knowledge, Skills and Responsibilities

  • Ability to work well in a team and manage stress
  • Complete Ramp Agent training with 90% average and an evaluation period
  • Ability to read documents, follow instructions, and understand ramp procedures, rules, and regulations
  • Aware of hazards and able to handle emergencies as needed
  • Work under tight time constraints to achieve quick aircraft turns
  • Meet grooming standards as outlined in company policies and labor agreement
  • Communicate information verbally and via radio equipment

Licensing/Certification

  • Must possess a valid state motor vehicle operator's license
  • Must obtain a SIDA badge and meet local airport requirements
  • May be required to obtain a Customs Seal for international flights

Physical Abilities

  • Lift/move items of 70 pounds regularly; repeatedly lift 40–50 pounds on raised surfaces
  • Climb, bend, kneel, crawl, and stoop; work in cramped or high places
  • Carry heavy items up/down jetway stairs; wear prescribed uniforms

Other Qualifications

  • Well-groomed appearance per company guidelines
  • U.S. citizen or authorization to work in the United States
  • Minimum age 18
  • Ability to comply with attendance standards
  • Ability to work shifts and/or overtime
